  • Bev Cartwright Posted 14/08/2020 10:17 am

To Prue and her family. I was so sad to hear Garry had passed away. I can’t imagine how difficult this must be for you all now, please remember that I care about you all. I hope you all feel surrounded by much love.

I’ll miss Garry. I loved ticking him off. He could be a bit of a naught boy sometimes. What I really loved more, was when he would disappear down stairs and return with a saucer with chocolates on it to share. We’re both addicted to chocolate. He always asked me not to tell Prue. I didn’t. She probably already knew.

He was good fun, in to everything. He loved his cigars with a drink, his motor bikes and cars. I’ll miss listening to his stories. He was so generous with both time and money for those in need. A good man. One I’ll miss.

You are all in my thoughts, Bev Cartwright

  • Elizabeth Anderson and Patrick Churchville Posted 14/08/2020 12:14 pm

When we first met Garry, in 1985, he was wearing jeans and a white shirt with French cuffs and cufflinks while atop top an elephant at Tiger Tops in Nepal. Fast forward nine months later, when we landed at Melbourne airport to stay for a week at the Krauss Haus with people we didn’t know very well but who had nevertheless invited us to be “their Yanks” for our visit to Oz. When Garry apologized about the size of the boot in his Silver Cloud Rolls Royce, Patrick asked him why he hadn’t brought the good car.

This began of a friendship that has lasted all these years, with crisscross visits in Australia (Prahran, Portsea, Merricks), Bahrain, and Florida.

Garry always made us feel so very welcome—and he made us laugh. He was a great human being and gentleman who didn’t take himself too seriously. That’s why we love him.

Love and hugs to all his girls.

    Elizabeth and Patrick

My great sympathies to Prue and the Krauss family. He was indeed larger than life with a unique sense of humour and great generosity! I have only fond and happy memories of my time around Garry including at the opera company Board, social events and as my proposer to WBC too! Again, thank you so much for proposing me Garry. Many memories. I will never forget Garry’s turbo charged martini’s or calling in for a coffee and ending up with a huge gourmet spread as brunch. I also once sent a fax to Garry in the days when they were still in vogue and he said to me: “What are you doing? My machine has run out of paper…” and he proceeded to give me a memorable quote from Shakespeare: “Brevity is the font of all wit!” Polonius to his son, i think, or?…and I do keep that in mind and certainly did laugh and love at the time! Vale Garry Krauss, great man and a real friend to us all.
