Heartfelt condolences to Philomena’s beloved and devoted husband Michael, and to her Children and Grandchildren of whom she was so proud. We here in Kerry, Ireland loved and admired her very much and feel a great sadness at her passing. She was a wonderfully kind human being, who along with being a wife and Mother, had her own phenomenal personal achievements, particularly in the world of political activism. Philomena’s integrity, sincerity and generosity of spirit made a huge impression on all who met her. Rest In Peace Philomena.

I first came to know my Auntie Phil as the loving elder who cared for me and protected me when I was just a shy kid in her home. And she made a place for me in her home so many times. I always left her feeling happy and more confident than before and she made me feel deeply proud of our family in ways that I find hard to put into words. My auntie gave me so much kindness and confidence and pride that remains with me and always will.
I send my love to Michael Snr and the O’Connor family during this sad time.

To a genuinely wonderful person, I’ll remember you Aunt Phil as the naturally kind, smart and fun person you were. I always got excited with your visits to London when young (and old) as I loved listening to your stories, normally in awe, about the extraordinary life you had. Condolences to Uncle Michael and her children and their younger families. Lots of love to you all & RIP Aunty Phil.

Beautiful service, you all did Philomena proud. Such a strong, wonderful woman who did so much for all she crossed paths with. Condolences to the Michael Snr and the O’Connor family. I am still smiling about the MUA waterfront picket mess tent incident – chased them out with a spoon! Magnificent. And the food did indeed dramatically improve! Vale Philomena.

  • Brendan Posted 17/09/2021 7:18 pm

Thank you all for your beautiful reflections on our Mum and Dad’s amazing wife and best friend. She was definitely one out of the box.

Sending love and best wishes to you all on the loss of the lovely Philomena

  • Jane Farrell Posted 24/09/2021 11:59 am

I am so sad to hear of Philomena’s passing. We worked together when we were rebuilding the Liquor Trades Division of the former LHMU (now UWU). She was a very fierce protector of all of us during the very hard years we faced. I loved her commonsense approach and focus on getting the jobs done. When we mentioned taking on the catering for the MUA waterfront dispute she did not hesitate and this was evidence of her strong commitment to union progressive principles. And she was never afraid of telling men what to do at a time when women were few and far between! I will always remember her smile, strength and her kindness. Much love to family and friends

  • Julie Wintle Posted 24/09/2021 3:13 pm

I shall never forget how proud Philomena and Michael were, when they came to witness Brendan’s First Speech; his then Maiden Speech; in Parliament House, Canberra, on February 13th 2002, along with Aunty Renee O’Connor, who flew in from Tralee. To have their son Brendan; now the Labor Federal Member for Burke, was a pinnacle point as parents. And then for Paul and I to stay with them all in Tralee, that year was true Irish joy.; especially at their local pub; in Tralee; with Aunty Renee, Philomena, Michael and Brother Pat, listening to a great live band Olien; with photos of The Kennedys on the walls. It was unforgettable. Philomena was a magnificent, welcoming and very wise woman. Poetry in motion. Love and Support to Michael, Brendan, Una Rose, and all the wonderful extended families. From Julie and Paul Wintle.

I have very fond memories of the feisty Philomena from the years I worked at the then FLAIEU when I got my first job in the Union movement. My sincerest condolences to the family.

  • Claire Mitchell Posted 25/09/2021 10:40 am

Condolences to the family. I had the pleasure to work with Philomena (Philby) at the then Liquor Trades Division of the LHMU, now UWU, Lots of laughs and fond memories. What a wonderful, kind and strong woman. She will be sadly missed. Vale Philomena.

  • Helen casey Posted 05/10/2021 3:22 pm

A big loss and heart felt condolences to her family.. Philomena’s resourcefulness, intelligence, quick thinking and commitment to union values were always on display when she worked at the LHMU liquor and hospitality division. She capably provided executive support, while also quietly contributing to the broader union movement wherever she could – women worker rights (some memorable moments when I was Trades Hall women’s officer), waterfront disputes ( bringing order to the food tent during MUA dispute was particularly memorable) and always her warmth and humour made her the best person to have around whatever the situation.
