I joined CBA 44 years ago and had to visit George quite often in the voucher department at 367 Collins Street. George was always so friendly, knew everyone by name and was an absolute gentleman. That was in the days when we had a telex area, so messages coming to the Bank by telex. It was also great to see George at the Bank Ball on many an occasion. What a wonderful legacy George has left behind and such a milestone he and his family can be proud of. I dare say his CBA serving record will not be broken. Sending George’s family my heartfelt condolences.

Uncle George was funny and kind. He always had the right word to say no matter the occasion. He was at our weddings, christenings, his sister-in-law Carols 80th and there for some sad times as well. Last Christmas was special as he came to Townsville and Even wore his funny Christmas shirt dad had given him . It was special time. We are not there but share in this loss with our family and friends.
To our family there, smile as he always did and keep safe.

I had the pleasure of working with George at Bourke St for over 5 years. I will never forget his chocolate draw in Safe Deposit, his knowledge of the guard keys and his professionalism with his customers. Another fond memory is if George and the trivia in the lunch room and he always had a great joke. He will be truly missed as a colleague and friend.

I worked at 385 Bourke Street with George for almost 7 years. I don’t think there was a topic that George wasn’t knowledgable about. He always had some interesting insight to share. George would always bring in a cake on his birthday, he would leave it in the lunchroom for anyone to have some. He would lead us during our emergency evacuation drills, holding his umbrella (which he always had) up high for us to follow. George, you were a true gentleman and you will be missed by so many.

My thoughts and prayers are with the friends and loved ones you have left behind. George you were a true gentleman and an amazing employee. With your passing we lose so much history of the bank. I loved your stories about banking in the early days, how things have changed and the lessons we should learn. Your love for banking and your commitment to your team will forever be unsurpassed.

Rest In Peace George, CBA mourns your loss.

I worked with George at 385 Bourke Street, Melbourne for 15 years. Over the years we had many conversations covering a wide range of topics. He was always witty and always had a huge smile on his face. Not only was he a ‘Gentleman’, he was a ‘Gentle Man’ by nature and spirit. My condolences to the family. Rest In Peace, my friend.

As a retired CBA Officer and past President of the CBA Staff Social and Charity Club (Vic) Inc, I worked with George and served on the Committee of the SS&CC for his 8 year tenure. George was a showman and was delighted in performing the duties of Master of Ceremonies at our large Annual Charity Balls in Melbourne. George was a true gentleman and a stickler for the protocols that had to be preserved. His Toastmasters experience gave him the confidence and booming voice to quieten the largest crowd. George will be sadly missed by his CBA colleagues and we send our condolences to his family and friends.

I had the absolute pleasure of working with Goeorge at 385 Bouke Street for over 20 years prior to my retirement in 2014. When the CBA acquired the State Bank of Victoria I was one of those fortunate SBV employees to be sent to 367 Colloins Street to obtain a first hand knowledge of the CBA systems and methods that had to be adopted going forward. It was George and his colleague Alan Cross who imparted this knowledge to us. I will always remember George operating the Coin machine with his Ear muffs on! Health & Safety was of major importance to him. The funeral service was a fitting tribute to a perfect gentleman and a sincere friend. May his soul Rest in Peace.

  • Brian Godley Posted 21/05/2020 3:40 pm

George was a very friendly neighbour. We would chat at the front gate and he would tell us of how things were when he was growing up in area , which was very interesting and informative. We found him to be a warm , friendly man who always loved a chat. He will be surely missed . Regards Darrin & Brian ( neighbours)
